Rome's Splendide Royal
The Splendide Royal (www.splendideroyal.com) opened in 2001 in part of 19th century Maronite monastery building off the Via Veneto Designed as a Baroque refuge, the hotel imparts an ambience that would have appealed to a cardinal or nobleman traveling in the 17th or 18th centuries. (Note: The glittering Muranoglass chandelier in the reception room appeared in Visconti's famous film The Leopard.) We found this hotel's distinctiveness to be achieved by two things: the Michelinstarred rooftop restaurant, Mirabelle, and the terraced suites overlooking the lush Villa Borghese park and the ancient walls that define the city of Rome. Looking out the windows of the gardenview rooms and suites, we felt we wete more a guest at a country estate rather than of a hotel dead center in a busding urban area.
Bruno Borghese's Mirabelle (www.mirabelle.it) is one of Rome's best restaurants, in a city where excellent hotel restaurants are the norm. (In Rome, extremely high reno make joint ventures between welllocated luxury hotels and wellknown chefs popular and often successful). The daily menu at Mirabelle, which was awarded its first Michelin star in 2006, is chosen by Head Chef Giuseppe Sestito to reflect the marker, and could include scallops and asparagus tips (Capesante al Basilico con Punte di Asparagi e Bottarga di Ricciola) or pumpkin pasta with almond crackers (Cappellotti di Zucca con Scaglie di Mandorle Croccanti e Fonduta, di Formaggio), both of which excellent selections.
Of course, the icing on the cake in Rome is always the view, and Mirabelle has one of the best. In warm weather, ask for one of the tables on the terrace, with its spectacular view of the Eternal City; otherwise, a table by the window in the light and airy dining room offers the name panorama. First Lady Laura Bush was entertained by the U.S. Ambassador and his wife at a dinner in Mirabelle's private dining roam. To book, contact the restanrant (mirabelle@splendideroyal.com; 39-064-216-8838 or 39-064-216-8837).
Among the seven suites, the Villa Borghese (number 515-516) offers as much outside as it does inside, with a 680 square foot terrace that's perfect for cocktail parties of up to 80, or for simply enjoying the expansive view during the eight months a year tha weather permits. The beasuy of this suite and select others in the Splendide Royal, is that the terraces face the huge garden in the middle of townthere is light and, just as important, complete privacy. A bit larger than the Villa Borghese Suite is the Presidential Suite, with its 750squarefoot salon and up to three connecting bedrooms. This one is on the sixth floor, where the view from the bedroom and living room terraces includes not only the Aurelian Wall and the gardens, but the massive dome of St. Peter's in the distance. Have clients who are on their honeymoon? Choose Junior Suite 415. All junior Suites are extraor dinarily comfortable, but we love this one for its private balcony, which is plenty spacious for a romantic breakfast. Inside, threes an extralarge bathroom with Jacuzzi tub.
Junior Suite 514 is a bit smaller, but upon stepping through its three French doors we were delighted to find a large terrace that overlooks Villa Borghese and features a Jacuzzi bath and a shower cabin. Deluxe rooms here are quite comfortable90 percent of them are outfitted with double sinks. We liked the garden view from number 504, and found that superior rooms areas well decorated, if a bit smaller, at 260 square feet.
General Manager Silvio Catalano (manager@splendideroyal.com; 39-064-21689), who has hosted such guests as Dionne Warwick, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Roberto Benigni, is determined to respond to the wishes of his guests and welcomes Families traveling with children. For reservations or special needs, contact Cécile Carraz (management@splendideroyal.com; 39-064-21689), assistant general managers Front Office Manager Alessia Cerne (fomgr@splendideroyal.com.com; 39-064-21689); or Veronica Pinna (reservations@splendideroyal.com; 39-064-21689), reservation coordinator, Head Concierge Ivan Crisante (splendide@splendideroy al.com) will organize horsedrawncarriage or helicopter tours, as well as any other special requests.
The Splendide Royal is about a 10minute walk from the Spanish Steps, at Via Porta di Pinciano 141. Guests will enjoy strolling through the adjacent Villa Borghese's acres of umbrella pines and visiting the Galleria Borghese Museum's collection of Bernini sculptures and other masterpieces (we hear reservations are important), as well as the new Museo Carlo Billotti, which specializes in modern and contemporary art.
Shopping along the Via Condotti and adjacent streets is appealing on foot, as there are many interesting boutiques along the way, however, the hotel will organize transport if desired. Private planes can land at Ciampino Airport, helicopters at private airfield Urbe Airport. For those arriving via schedulued international flights, the hotel will arrange transport, potentially in a Rolls Royce, from Leonardo da Vinci Airport at Fiumicino.
